Tesla’s advanced self-driving put to real-world test in Abu Dhabi
Organised framework assesses safety and operational readiness
ABU DHABI – The Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), supported by the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council, has overseen the launch of Tesla’s Advanced Self-Driving (Supervised) road trials in Abu Dhabi.
Conducted under driver supervision, the programme marks the first time the emirate has tested the technology on public roads within a structured regulatory environment.
Officials say the initiative is designed to evaluate real-world performance and confirm safety readiness.
First trials
Authorities said the trials are being carried out through a carefully organised framework aimed at monitoring the system’s behaviour in live traffic conditions. The move forms part of Abu Dhabi’s broader push to examine emerging mobility technologies before considering wider deployment.
The testing programme is intended to generate detailed operational data while ensuring that road users remain protected during the evaluation phase. Officials emphasised that the supervised nature of the trials remains central to the process.
Regulatory support
The initiative is being implemented in coordination with the Legislation Lab at the General Secretariat of the UAE Cabinet. The collaboration is described as a strategic step to support innovation within approved regulatory structures while maintaining strict safety oversight.
Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre, said the supervision of the trials reflects the authority’s legislative and regulatory role. He noted that the tests represent a significant step towards assessing the technology’s real-world performance and gathering the data required before any potential expansion.
Future mobility
AlGhfeli added that the organised framework, developed with strategic partners, aims to balance the encouragement of smart mobility solutions with the protection of road users. The programme forms part of Abu Dhabi’s continuing efforts to evaluate advanced transport innovations and strengthen readiness for next-generation mobility systems aligned with approved safety requirements.
